About NAFRIWA

About-us-1
Empowering Women. Strengthening Communities.

Building Sustainable Futures

The Network of African Women Alliance (NAFRIWA) is a grassroots-led CBO operating in Nairobi, Kenya. We deliver programs that empower vulnerable women and girls to overcome adversity and build sustainable livelihoods.

Through mental health support, life skills training, economic empowerment initiatives, mentorship, and advocacy, NAFRIWA equips women with the tools and support needed to improve their well-being and achieve independence. We strengthen resilience, nurture leadership, and expand access to opportunities that enable women and girls to thrive and contribute to positive, lasting community transformation.

"What began as a merry-go-round savings circle among young mothers in Nairobi has grown into a professionally governed Alliance — transforming survival into sustainable community leadership."

Vision, Mission & Why Our Work Matters

Our Vision

A future where women and girls thrive as catalysts for equality, innovation, and lasting community transformation. We envision communities where no woman is left behind — where every woman has the tools, networks, and opportunities to lead and inspire.

Our Mission

To provide women and girls with the tools, networks, and opportunities they need to achieve empowerment and sustainable growth. We advance SDGs including No Poverty, Good Health and Well-Being, Gender Equality, Decent Work and Economic Growth, and Reduced Inequality.

Why Our Work Matters

In Kenya's Central informal settlements, women face systemic exclusion from economic opportunity, healthcare, and civic life. NAFRIWA transforms this resilience into leadership — not just helping women survive, but ensuring they thrive as change-makers driving sustainable community development.

Our Programs

Three Key Thematic Areas

Our work is structured around three pillars that address the full spectrum of challenges facing vulnerable women and girls in informal settlements.

1. Socio-Economic Empowerment

We equip women and girls with essential life skills and economic tools to achieve independence and break cycles of poverty.

  • Leadership training and mentorship
  • Financial literacy and entrepreneurship development
  • Vocational skills training
  • Start-up kits and business support
  • Economic independence and long-term self-reliance

2. Women Health & Wellness

We champion health rights and resilience by creating safe spaces for dialogue, reducing stigma, and ensuring access to essential services.

  • Mental wellness: depression, addiction, and anxiety support
  • Sexual and reproductive health (family planning, dignity kits)
  • HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, and socioeconomic support
  • GBV prevention, medical care, counseling, and legal aid
  • Community awareness and stigma reduction campaigns

3. Civic Education & Legal Rights

We empower vulnerable women — widowed, single, differently-abled, young mothers, domestic workers — with knowledge of their rights and responsibilities.

  • Civic education and legal rights awareness
  • Digital literacy and cyber security awareness
  • Pathways to support and governance participation
  • Strengthening women's voices in decision-making
  • Protecting dignity and claiming rightful place in society
Institutional Governance

Accountability & Transparency

NAFRIWA is guided by a 13-member all-women board that provides strategic oversight and ensures mission alignment. Day-to-day operations are led by the Secretariat and a dedicated team, supported by robust financial controls, transparent reporting systems, and annual independent audits.

This governance framework guarantees accountability, strengthens institutional resilience, and builds donor confidence in our ability to deliver sustainable impact. We advance the SDGs, ensuring women and girls not only survive challenges but thrive as change-makers driving sustainable community development.
